Project Overview
The Life Sciences Centre (LSC) at the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver campus stands as a beacon of innovation and collaboration in global medical technology research. Designed to foster interdisciplinary exchange and scientific advancement, the LSC is home to a vibrant community of over 2,650 individuals, including leading researchers, graduate and medical students, professors, and dedicated administrative staff.
This dynamic hub integrates state-of-the-art laboratories and offices with a thoughtfully curated network of shared amenities. These include faculty and administration suites, classrooms, lecture theatres, a comprehensive library, and specialized medical teaching and support spaces. All are seamlessly connected by a striking architectural feature - a central interior ‘street’ flanked by two soaring multi-storey atria that serve as the heart of the building’s social and spatial organization.
-
Natural light floods the interior through expansive glazing and open sightlines, creating an environment that is not only energy-efficient but also deeply humane. The generous access to daylight and outdoor views enhances the livability of work and lab spaces, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and contributing to the well-being and productivity of its occupants.
Whether hosting a seminar, conducting groundbreaking research, or simply enjoying a quiet moment in a sunlit common area, the LSC offers a setting where science and community thrive in harmony.
Completed under previous firm Bunting Coady Architects w/ Diamond Schmitt Architects.
