Project Overview
A Filipino community leader first came to Formosis with the goal of incorporating a Filipino Cultural Centre into a mixed-use development in 2016. While that first site on East Broadway was not a good fit, the idea has persisted, and we have explored incorporating this program on numerous subsequent sites. Now, through the cooperation of all levels of government and numerous stakeholders, Formosis is profoundly honored to be the architects bringing the proposed Filipino Cultural Centre to life on a flagship location on Main Street.
Located in close proximity to rapid transit including the future Broadway subway, the Filipino Cultural Centre is strategically located to become a beacon of Main Street's vibrant arts and entertainment district. Our design approach places the cultural centre at the forefront, with front doors opening to a new south-west facing plaza at Main Street and East 4th Ave. Community spaces would fill the ground floor along Main Street and connect vertically up through several floors designated for rich Filipino cultural programming, learning, and celebration. The months ahead will bring community engagement and development of the design in collaboration with the Filipino community.

A core element of the team’s conceptual approach is the innovative mixed-use model that ensures the long-term financial viability of the Cultural Centre. A separate entrance along E. 4th Avenue will contain a contemporary hotel lobby serving 25 floors of high-demand hotel accommodations. This combination, a continuation of Vancouver's successful tradition of innovative mixed-use developments in walkable urban neighbourhoods, is the economic mechanism that makes this cultural investment possible for the community.
Formosis is looking forward to working with the Filipino community to create a dedicated and unique cultural centre through engagement, conversation, and collaboration.
